Halloween – The Origin

‘Trick or treat, something sweet, give us something good to eat!...
or we will make your home derelict with toilet paper
and bombard your windows with eggs and bricks!’

Yes it is that time of year again when kids fill out the streets with pumpkin shaped holders begging complete strangers for candy and treats while wearing obscure costumes of superheroes and cartoon characters. Or if you are a little older, the costumes are a little naughtier and your alcohol tolerance level is surprising higher than usual.

But if you’re a witch, this is the time of Samhain!

Pronounced ‘sow-en’, this day is the equivalent of a Wiccan new year and is a great celebration among our people. It is a time to honour our ancestors and remember those who are ‘late’ by either placing an offering on your alter of food and wine or simply setting a place for them at the dinner table.  Not a lot of people know this but Halloween stemmed from the Wiccan celebration of Samhain and has developed into something most different.

You see, many years ago, when winter was well on its way and everyone’s crops were either being harvested or destroyed, there were many needs that people did not have so they would need to ask for it. But being a witch and receiving something without returning something is unheard of. So people would dress up in costumes and go door to door providing entertainment for their neighbours. They would do shorts from plays, sing songs, dance around, tell jokes, anything that would entertain the audience and then when the performance was over they would receive food in return. Sound familiar?

With that said, don’t forget to help a friend smile and remember those who have passed.

Peace be with you.

Managing Social Media

It is common knowledge that living in today’s fast-paced, technology driven society, it is even harder to be somebody than before the internet arrived. We only had to be ourselves and that would determine the people we attracted and those people would live mere blocks away, back when the only way to communicate involved a dying postal system and phone bills your parents couldn’t afford.  Today we are presented with hundreds of different ways to meet people and create relationships that span over miles and miles of distance. Social media has given us the opportunity to make friends anywhere in the world without leaving our beds. But that also leaves us with a bit of a disadvantage.

Social media has become so popular that using it is the equivalent of talking in a crowded room where everyone has something to say. Chances are, you won’t be heard unless you are famous or at the very least; funny. With that in mind, here are 7 tips I have invented for myself in order to attract followers and gain a better understanding of those followers.

(The following can be used for all Social Media Platforms)

  1. Follow likeminded people.

What is the point of being on social media if you don’t like what you see? Follow users that have the same interests as you do and soon enough others will follow you in return for the same reasons.

  1. Share. Post.

A constant and systematic social media user is a happy social media user. It is human nature to be nosy, and people have a need to be in the know. Provide information in an organised format.

  1. What’s the point?

It is also important to remember that content needs to be useful or informative. There is no point in posting the first thing that comes to mind, everything should follow a thought process. Make your readers think.

  1. Hahaha all the way

Although it is important for your content to be informative it should also be emphasised that people don’t like to se boring content. Add a little light humour to keep your audience entertained. This helps you seem more human to the public eye.

  1. Inspire

It is a very good idea to inspire your followers every now and again. You never know who is going to need a pick-me-up and will look to your account for that. Even the use of imagery makes you seem more attractive and a lot more capable, making you inspirational in a sense.

  1. Everyone likes a bargain

If you are selling something, whether it be a product, service or even your ‘brand’ people are more attracted to something that will cost them less. Whether it is money or time, everyone could use a little more of it.

  1. Asked and Answered.

Lastly, your interaction with your followers. Provide an easy to use medium that allows your followers to communicate with you. Whether it is a simple ‘yay or nay’ system or comment box below, it is always good to see what your followers think of you. Remember that all critique is good critique and can only help improve your stats.

Let these few and easy steps be the guide to a happy life on social media. And remember that you can  only move forward by taking the first step.

Peace be with you.

Can Love be True?

Today I was questioned by a good friend on the mechanics of relationships and the validity of true love. While most of the questions seemed easy enough to answer, most of my answers came out as whimsical smiles and starry-eyed sighs. At first I couldn’t decide if my relationship felt like puppy love or true-love. Below are three questions one can answer in order to find out if true love is nearby.

  1. Does he/she tick all your boxes?

Truth is; it doesn’t really matter what is on our list for the ‘perfect person’. Human beings usually find love in the most random of places and the physical and emotional attribute that you identify on your little list will not help you get closer to the one you are meant to be with. I personally fell in love with someone who was the complete opposite of my list and I could not have expected better. This just proves the validity of description and identification. Let people into your life, you will be surprised what comes your way.

  1. Does your specific situation allow a relationship?

Your love life is a pool of water, constantly flowing and changing direction. Life is a bolder, all the little and big things that come your way make the pool splash and ripple, and that much harder to flow smoothly. Your current situation can lead to a harmful and scarring situation. You need to be stable in your home life, work life and social life before you can have a stable love life. I always re-evaluate my circumstances every now and again to ensure my happiness and the happiness of my significant other. You need to love your work, enjoy your home and have friends that care for you and will always be there.

  1. Are you the ‘relationship type’?

I saved this for last because it is the most important. You need to be happy with yourself before anyone can be happy with you. Have you accepted yourself? Do you wake up knowing who you are and what you are going to do for the day? It is important that you know yourself, relationships are all about sharing. And if you don’t know what it is that you are sharing, how sure can you be that you are actually sharing? Know yourself and share yourself. After all, there is only one you in the world, and everyone deserves a piece of it.

I hope this helped and that you have happiness come your wayJboy-girl-cute-couple-holding-hands-wallpapers

Father to us all.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, father of a country and inspiration to us all.

Born on the 18th of July in the year 1918, in the village of Mvezo in Umtata found in the Cape Province, to his parents Nosekeni Fanny and Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa. No one could have expected him to become president of South Africa. Even less than the first black president and the first elected president in fully democratic South Africa.

There are many things Nelson Mandela was well known for, like; his involvement in the anti-apartheid revolution, his deviance against state and his imprisonment on the well-known Robben Island for 27 years, his election as the South African President and of course winning the Nobel Peace prize after terminating apartheid.

Nelson Mandela was more than that though. I think he was best known for his kind-heart and for being a role model to us all. He stood as a beacon to so many, helping mould this country into something worth saving every day.

He lived a happy life, running a country from 1994 to 1999. Followed still by great political philanthropy and charity work and then finally reaching his end on the 5th of December 2013.

Here in South Africa he is known as father to the nation. Sure, to some he was a terrorist, but always remember that one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. And that is what he did, he fought for freedom. But when looking at his life and all that this great man stood for; peace, equality, honour and respect, he should be considered a father to us all.

Peace be with you my brothers and sisters.

4Oth for the Island Queen

This photo story is all about the 40th birthday of Rensche van Tonder, a hard-working and loving mother and teacher.

A treasure chest filled with jewellery, precious shells and gems.

Her sisters having a blast and celebrating together.

She shared a beautiful, heart-wrenching slow-dance with her son.

All the guests enjoyed themselves. This shot taken with one of the photo props I created.

Lanterns on the deck.

The birthday party was beach-themed, bringing the coast to the heart of Johannesburg. There were beautiful decorations all around and everyone gasped on entrance. There were white sheets acting like canopies on the ceilings, beach sand all around, candle-lanterns hanging on poles and branches and sitting in the sand. Rensche was the Island Queen of the evening.  She had a beautiful shell tiara and danced like a fish out of water. The family surrounding her were happy to share this milestone with her, all of them dancing in the sand, drinking like fish, swimming between the beach balls and balloons and worshiping their queen with presents and confectionery treats. The different photos used display small moments in a very momentous evening.

Photos Showing My Abilities

This was taken to focus on the light travelling through dust.

A shaky bus ride in the early morning.

A silhouette photo I took on an evening stop, in the fields on your way out of Johannesburg.

A bee sleeping in the nook of an arum lily, in the early morning of spring day.

Photo from a spontaneous photo shoot of my friends.

Halloween self-portrait that turned out better than I expected.

A Short Biography

For those reading this, there are only few things that you truly need to know about me. Like every man and woman there are the shell and the substance you will find inside of it, and that which surrounds us.

My name is Daniel and I am 21 years old. I have grown up in South Africa and am sure to be staying here for many years to come. I am loyal to those who surround me, and that includes the beautiful landscapes that inspire me every day in this one-of-a-kind country.

I am passionate and caring, my drive always associated with a creative outlet like writing or drawing. Since I can remember I have always been a people’s person, catering for others needs and growing in doing so. I have gone through a lot, but my past means nothing to me, except the lessons I learnt from it and my future is the perfect opportunity to learn more. I believe that every day is a chance to be better than I am.

I am as simple as I am complex. I don’t ask for much from people, only the same respect I give them and the same amount of chances to prove I am worthy of more than I let on. The world is more than our oyster, it’s an ocean that adds to us, takes from us and gives us exactly what we deserve. We just wait for the opportunity to show what beautiful pearls we truly are. The beautiful pearl I am.

Caught in African Hair

The Pretoria Girls High has had a complicated few weeks and on the 22nd I attended a press conference they held at Boston Media House in Sandton. The Press Conference was dedicated to the issue concerning what is to be done about African female’s hair and the protests that had arisen on the 29th of August 2016, from that specific issue. The protest specifically against hair policies in the school’s code of conduct.

To my understanding, there was a disputation on whether or not African female’s hair should be cut, relaxed or tied up when in school, and this in return caused uproar in public opinion, this including the public, the media and celebrities not only locally but internationally as well. An intervention by the Gauteng Education MEC, Mr Panyaza Lesufi had to take place which then led to the review on the hair policy as many viewed it as ‘anti-black’ or in simpler terms, racist.

The press kit provided at the conference states; ‘After endless meetings that were attended by the school governing body, RCL and the Gauteng Education MEC, the school decided to suspend its hair policy’. Mr. Lesufi stated; ‘There will be no learner that will be victimized purely because of their hairstyle until the school’s governing body has finalized a new code of conduct that deals specifically with these issues’.

During the press conference I asked one of the representatives on the public relations panel whether or not the fact that teachers and students are able to cause a disturbance of this magnitude should reflect on how the school approaches discipline and focuses on education. The response unsatisfactory as one of the representatives stated; ‘ Last year we got 99.6% on our matric results and 458 distinctions so we think very good’, as I was not allowed to ask follow up questions, I believe that this answer was too vague and leads me to question the standard of education at Pretoria Girls High.

This incident has unfortunately reflected badly upon Pretoria Girls High and has damaged their reputation inevitably. Although it is encouraged to enforce school rules and policies it should not be encouraged to oppress learners. In the same breath schools show not allow negligent conduct towards other learners who are willing to learn but are being prevented by outraged and emotional barriers that could have been foreseen and altered.

The panel apologized on the behalf of the school and encourages other schools to also take the necessary action and review school policies regarding hair and the equal treatment of learners to prevent the same results.

Gordhan attempts to clarify

On Thursday the 22nd of September, the communication team representing Minister of Finance, Mr. Pravin Gordhan, held a press conference at Boston Media House in Sandton.

The press conference was to be allocated to answering questions on multiple subjects but focusing on the complications and allegations made by the Hawks on a Rogue Unit created by the South African Revenue Service. This rogue unit was later identified and presented by the minister’s communications team, to be a ‘Special Investigations unit established to secure the effective enforcement of the laws set out in the SARS Act.’ When asked about the Book released by Exclusive Books detailing the SARS rogue unit, Sanele Nthuli, head speaker of the communication team, answered; ’We are not here to discuss the book, but my thoughts on the book is that it is really good and you should get it from Exclusive Books’.

The communication team then continued explaining that Mister Gordhan has cooperated entirely with the Hawks investigation, also providing a chronological timeline that highlighted the correspondence between the Hawks and Gordhan. When asked about the whereabouts of Gordhan, Sanele Nthuli, explained; ‘If Gordhan is not a suspect, legally speaking; he is not obliged to appear or to provide any statement since he is protected under section 35 of the constitution. The only way that Gordhan can be compelled to appear before the Hawks is if he is arrested.’

The investigation conducted by the Hawks concerning Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and the Special Investigation Unit started on Frebruary the 19th 2016, when the Hawks asked Gordhan to provide answers for 27 questions they had compiled and has been ongoing to date. The results of the investigation have yet to be released.

Cast a Circle: A Photo Story

A good start to any circle is a 10 minute meditation to clear the mind.  Above, our model is meditating outside on the designated area – which you choose according to comfort.

Good Day my fellow Wiccans!

This week I was asked, for my tertiary subject -Photo Journalism 3, to create a photo story that entices my readers and creates intrigue for my blog. Well seeing as today is the first of September (considered the first day of spring in many southern hemisphere countries) and with the New Moon approaching, I thought it best to give you a ‘How to on Circle Casting’.

Most magic is performed in the circle and it would be particularly prudent to cast the circle in order to meditate, open chakras, use the powers and energies around us as well as within us and cast spells and create potions. Think of circle casting as the Wiccan equivalent to Christian Praise and Worship. Below you will find images of a good friend helping me by casting a circle so that I can provide a photo story to you, my loyal followers.

Please be advised that altar work is very personal and need not be done exactly as demonstrated. You merely need the basics such as:

1X BLACK CANDLE to represent the masculine powers at work

1x WHITE CANDLE to represent the feminine powers at work

1x RED DINNER CANDLE to represent the element of Fire

1x INCENSE HOLDER & INCENSE to represent the element of Air

1x GLASS/JUG OF WATER to represent the element of Water

1x SALT to represent the element of Earth and to close your circle

LIGHTER/MATCHES to light the candles and/or smudge sticks

(All the photos were either taken with my DSLR Nikon D3100 camera or my iPhone 5’s camera)

Enjoy and Peace be with you!

Above our model calmly meditates, opening his chakras. Focusing on his breathing and listening to the wondrous sounds of nature.

Here we see small glasses with contents pertaining to the elements. When casting a circle, it is important to represent the elements, either on your altar or on your circle, each to be placed at the four directions (North – Earth, West – Water, South – Fire and East – Air).

Our model is now lighting his smudge stick with an altar candle, to remove negative energies. (Smudge sticks are a variety of herbs with different uses, tied together and dried for burning)

The model using the smudge stick (made of White Rose, Sage and Lavender) and dispersing the smoke and keeping it lit with the feather.

Once you have cleared the space of negative energies, you can either use an athame (magical knife), wand (made of crystals or special wood) or salt to close off your circle for magical work. Our model is sprinkling salt as he lacks an athame or wand.

Now that your circle is cast you can cast spells and create potions. Our model is using a mortar and pestle to crush rosemary, lavender, coarse salt, olive oil and boiled water to create healing potions. (This potion, with a piece of Rose Quartz in it, has to sit in a wide open space, where both sunlight and moonlight can reach it for an entire Moon Cycle, before it can be sifted and ingested)

It is always good to replenish yourself once you have finished your magical work. Our model is eating foods either completely natural or made of only natural ingredients. You can also his altar, making the use of candles, incense, crystals and herbs.

This photo just came at the right time. The model is clearly eating an apple, ripe and green as it should be.

I took this photo with the black and white filter on my iPhone Camera. The composition was just perfect during his meditation with the sun out.
